Abstract

This paper presents educational materials to supplement the DBMS training in the Accounting Information System (AIS) course.  It is a continuation of our work in “Supplemental Materials for Database Management System Knowledge and Skills in the Accounting Information Systems Course” (Pillsbury and Wang, 2001) in which we reviewed the changing nature of database education in AIS classes and provided supplemental active learning instructional aids to enhance the conceptual database coverage in AIS texts.  In this paper, we provide a general discussion of Entity-Relationship based AIS architecture, Database Management Systems (DBMS) and the importance of database normalization.  We then present guidelines for constructing queries, which are the real power behind any database management system.  Finally, we provide instructional materials for teaching students how to prepare more complex queries.  The “hands-on” query exercises we present are illustrated using MS Access 2000 but could be utilized with any other relational database program.
